Harry ClARKE WiNDOW (on WIKIPEDIA)

I though this was a beautiful image for our beekeeping fraternity.  Harry Clarke was the most amazing artist that Ireland ever produced.

This design was executed in 1914.  Before Isle of Wight disease hit the country and before Buckfast bees arrived.  If you zoom in on the image you may be surprised by the colour of the bees he rendered into the design...... must be artistic license..right??

Italian bees had been imported into Ireland before 1914. He may have seen them here or in the UK. He may have visited the Mediterranean and seen yellow bees there, unless he has left some biographical notes, it will likely be impossible to know the source of his inspiration.

It may be of interest to know the drawing above depicts Saint Gobnait. It is a design drawing for a stained glass window, which may be seen in the Honan chapel in Cork city. It is close to the University College.

judging by the mix of colours and the relative girth of the abdomens they are probably varieties of Bumble and Carder bees etc. which are more abundant and familiar to people
